Midfielder Salum Abubakar, popularly known as “Sure Boy,” has officially ended his contract with Tanzanian champions Yanga SC.
The experienced midfielder joined Yanga in December 2021 after reaching an agreement to terminate his long-standing contract with former club Azam FC, where he had spent around 14 years.
His move to Yanga came at a time when competition between the two clubs was intensifying, making his transfer a significant moment in Tanzanian football.
Following his arrival, both clubs continued to strengthen their squads, with Yanga signing players such as Mudathir Yahya and Sure Boy, while Azam FC responded with signings like Feisal Salum “Fei Toto.” Yanga later added Prince Dube, while Azam also brought in Frank Domayo and Didier Kavumbagu, and Yanga signed Gadiel Michael.
During his four-year spell at Yanga, Sure Boy won five league titles, three CRDB Cup trophies, and a Community Shield, as well as featuring in the CAF Confederation Cup final, where he played a key role especially in the absence of Khalid Aucho.
He leaves Yanga with a strong legacy, having contributed not only on the pitch but also off it, where his experience and leadership in the dressing room helped motivate younger players throughout the squad.
JKT Tanzania are reportedly among the clubs interested in securing his signature, as his career in Tanzanian football continues to attract attention.
The nickname “Sure Boy” was inherited from his father, Aboubakar Salum, a former Yanga winger who starred for the club in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
