Yanga head coach Pedro Goncalves has revealed that his team is undergoing intensive preparations aimed at scoring multiple goals in their crucial CAF Champions League clash against JS Kabylie, set for Sunday, February 15, at the New Amaan Complex in Zanzibar.
The Tanzanian champions must win by at least two goals to keep their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals alive, depending on the outcome of the other Group B fixture between Al Ahly and AS FAR.
Speaking in Zanzibar, where the team has entered its second day of preparations since arriving yesterday, Goncalves admitted that Yanga had opportunities to secure qualification earlier. However, a home draw and two away defeats have forced them into a must-win situation in their final group match.
He noted that the team has performed well overall in the competition, but their main shortcoming has been failing to convert the numerous chances they have created.
The Portuguese tactician emphasized that significant work is being done in training to improve the team’s finishing ahead of Sunday’s decisive encounter.
“When the group stage began, not many people believed we had a chance of reaching the quarter-finals. That was because we were placed in a group with teams that have strong records in Africa and have invested heavily,” said Goncalves.
“Now the situation is slightly different. We dropped five important points through a home draw and away defeats. We had a big opportunity to ease the pressure earlier, but we still have a chance to do well at home in this final match.”
“We will attack with intensity to get the goals we need. We are working hard in training, giving players different exercises to improve their composure in the final third. We need goals, but we must also stay focused and avoid conceding. Both are possible,” he added.
Yanga continue their preparations in Zanzibar as JS Kabylie are expected to arrive later tonight ahead of what promises to be a decisive showdown.
