The hopes of a Tanzanian team reaching the CAF Champions League (CAFCL) quarter-finals now rest solely with Yanga, following Simba’s elimination from the competition.
The 2–2 draw Simba recorded against Esperance today officially ended their dream of qualifying for the quarter-finals, as even if they win their remaining two matches, they can only reach seven points—a tally that Esperance and Petro Atletico can surpass.
Yanga are now left with the huge responsibility of chasing a quarter-final ticket in order to continue flying Tanzania’s flag proudly in this season’s CAF Champions League.
Yanga’s next match will be against AS FAR, scheduled to be played on Saturday, February 7, in Morocco. If Yanga manage to win this away fixture, they could secure early qualification for the quarter-finals.
When the CAF Champions League groups were drawn, many gave Yanga little chance of performing well, but so far it is Yanga who appear to be carrying Tanzania’s hopes in the competition.
