Yanga are reported to be pushing hard to complete the signing of Pamba Jiji goalkeeper Yona Amos during the current transfer window.
Since last season, Yanga have tried to secure Amos without success, but this time it appears the goalkeeper’s transfer could go through, as he is expected to take the place of Aboubakar Khomein, whose contract expires at the end of the season.
Khomein has struggled to get regular playing time ahead of Djigui Diarra and Aboutwalib Mshery, who is currently handling goalkeeping duties in the Mapinduzi Cup.
Yona has been in excellent form this season, and even last season he finished second among local goalkeepers with 11 clean sheets, behind Mashujaa’s Patrick Munthari, who had 14.
Pamba Jiji head coach Francis Baraza has said the club will strengthen the goalkeeping department, although he was not ready to confirm whether Yona is set to join Yanga.
“As we speak right now, I have not started signing players yet, but if we are to add reinforcements, I will need to bring in a central defender following the departure of Abdallah Kheri ‘Sebo’. Even before that, the process of looking for a central defender was ongoing, and also the goalkeeper position,”
“I have not said that Yona is leaving, but there is a procedure to add players in the areas I mentioned. As for our number one goalkeeper leaving, I have no such information—I hear it the same way you do,” said Baraza.
Baraza added that there are many rumors circulating, and therefore he cannot speak about a player who is still training with the team. If a deal does go through, then he would be in a position to comment.
“This is the transfer window and many things are being said, so regarding Yona leaving, there is a lot of talk. But as a coach, I have no official information, although the process of adding a player in his position is ongoing,” Baraza was quoted by Mwanaspoti.
