Young Africans SC (Yanga) has submitted an official complaint to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following a series of incidents that occurred during their CAF Champions League match against JS Kabylie in Algeria on Friday, a match that ended in a goalless draw.
During the game, JS Kabylie fans were repeatedly seen attacking Yanga goalkeeper Djigui Diarra by throwing stones and water bottles at him.
The incidents intensified in the second half, forcing the match to be halted for several minutes before calm was restored and play resumed.
However, even after the final whistle, more attacks were directed at Yanga players and technical staff as they exited the pitch.
Yanga’s Media and Communications Manager, Ali Kamwe, confirmed that the club has lodged its complaint and is now leaving the matter in CAF’s hands.
“First, we are grateful to have returned safely from Algeria. We didn’t meet all our objectives 100%, but we are thankful to come back home with one point.”
“The environment during the match against JS Kabylie was tough. We faced challenges from the day we landed in Algeria, even after the match.”
“We submitted our complaints regarding the incidents to the match commissioner, and fortunately, CAF security officers were present at the stadium and witnessed everything.”
“The match commissioner assured us that our complaints have been received and will be acted upon. We are not complaining so that JS Kabylie gets punished; CAF knows the appropriate steps to take based on its regulations.”
“All we want is an end to such acts that we face whenever we play in those countries,” Kamwe said.
This is not the first time Yanga has faced fan-related violence in Algeria. In 2023, during their CAF Confederation Cup final against USM Alger, they experienced similar hostile conditions.
Yanga players and staff were attacked from the moment they arrived at their hotel, and the July 05 Stadium—venue for the final—felt like a conflict zone, with continuous fireworks and repeated interruptions of the match.
