Thierry Henry Defends Messi Amid Red Card Debate

Football legend and analyst Thierry Henry has come to Lionel Messi’s defense following widespread debate over an incident during Argentina’s World Cup match against Algeria that some fans and pundits believed warranted a red card.

Discussing the referees’ decision and the use of VAR in the incident, Henry argued that a player's intent is a crucial factor when assessing challenges and controversial moments on the pitch.

“I’ve seen many people saying that the incident deserved a red card, but for me, a player’s intention is extremely important when analyzing situations like this properly,” Henry said.

According to the former Arsenal and Barcelona star, replays clearly show that Messi’s focus was on the ball and that he was attempting a normal football action rather than trying to harm his opponent.

Henry acknowledged that there was contact during the incident but cautioned against making harsh judgments based solely on slow-motion replays.

“That’s why VAR exists, but relying on slow-motion footage to determine dangerous play can sometimes distort the true nature of an incident,” he explained.

He went on to say that the match officials reviewed the situation carefully before reaching their decision and found no reason to issue even a yellow card to Messi.

Henry also believes that the intense scrutiny surrounding the incident has been driven more by Messi’s profile than by the challenge itself.

“People are talking about it so much because it’s Messi. If it had been another player, I don’t think there would be this much discussion,” he said.

In conclusion, Henry insisted that the incident was accidental and carried no intent to injure the opposing player.

“In my view, it was an unfortunate accident, completely unintentional, and nothing more than that. Football is a contact sport, and sometimes situations look worse to the naked eye than they actually are,” he concluded.
