Yanga SC have made it clear that this season they do not want to enter the CAF Champions League simply to participate; they want to compete for the title.
Yanga head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has outlined his ambitions, insisting that his biggest desire is to lead the club to CAF Champions League (CAFCL) glory.
Speaking in Botswana as his team prepared to face Gaborone United in a match that later ended in a 1-1 draw, Manqoba said he believes Yanga have what it takes to go far and ultimately become African champions.
“My goal is to become African champions. We will try to achieve that. I believe we have a team that can compete and become champions of Africa,” Manqoba said.
Manqoba’s comments clearly show that Yanga’s technical bench have set ambitions beyond those established by the club’s management.
This season, Yanga’s management have set a minimum target of reaching the quarter-finals after the Wananchi successfully reached the CAF Champions League group stage for three consecutive seasons.
However, Manqoba and his technical staff appear determined to surpass that target and go even further in the competition.
The technical bench believes the squad possesses the quality, experience and ability to compete with Africa’s top clubs and reach an even higher level.
Yanga were unable to secure victory in Botswana the other day after being held to a 1-1 draw by Gaborone United.
The result means Yanga now have work to do in the return leg.
To keep Manqoba’s dream of becoming African champions alive, the Wananchi now need to beat Gaborone United in the return leg to progress to the next stage, move into the first round and ultimately continue their pursuit of a place in the group stage.
