Stephane Aziz Ki has returned to Yanga SC, and this time his comeback to Jangwani is far from ordinary. It is a signing that carries memories, expectations and a strong statement about what the Tanzanian champions want to achieve this season.
The attacking midfielder has returned to Yanga from Libya’s Al Ittihad, taking the place of Allan Okello, who has been sold to Moroccan side AS FAR. For Yanga, this is not simply a move to fill a vacant position; it is the return of a player who has already proven his value in the same environment he is coming back to.
Aziz Ki left Yanga two seasons ago after playing an important role in a squad that dominated domestic football. During his first spell at Jangwani, he scored 52 goals in all competitions and provided 34 assists.
The 2023/24 season was the peak of his form. He won the NBC Premier League Golden Boot, the Player of the Season award and the Best Midfielder award. That is the legacy he brings back to Jangwani.
Now the question is not whether Aziz Ki is capable of playing for Yanga.
The real question is: How much better can the current Aziz Ki make Yanga?

Now imagine the combination of these two types of players.
Shalulile is a striker who likes to find space, run in behind defenders and be in the right place at the right time.
Aziz Ki can be the player who finds him. That is where Yanga could have a major weapon. If Aziz Ki receives the ball between the lines and Shalulile starts running behind the defence, defenders are forced to make a choice. If they follow Aziz Ki, they give Shalulile space.
If they track Shalulile, they give Aziz Ki time and room to deliver a pass or make a run into the box.

And What About Suleiman Mwalimu?

This could help establish chemistry quickly. Aziz Ki will not have to start everything from scratch. He is returning to an environment where some of the players already understand how he plays.
But Can He Fill Allan Okello’s Void?
This is an important question.
Okello possessed considerable creativity and was part of a system that Yanga relied on to create chances.
Aziz Ki should not be expected to be a copy of Okello.
Instead, Yanga have chosen to bring back a player with a different profile but with the ability to make a major contribution in the same area.
The biggest difference could be Aziz Ki’s experience of Tanzanian football and his ability to score goals.
While Okello was still building his history at Yanga, Aziz Ki is returning already knowing what it takes to succeed at Jangwani.
That could shorten the adaptation period significantly.
The Biggest Challenge Is Here
Despite all the expectations, Aziz Ki should not be expected to carry Yanga on his own.
Relying on one player to provide creativity, goals and victories throughout an entire season could be a mistake.
Yanga need a system that gives Aziz Ki the right environment to do his job.
If opponents mark him closely, there must be other players capable of punishing the spaces that open up.
If he is deployed too far from goal, Yanga could lose his effectiveness in the final third.
If he is given too much freedom without midfield balance, the team could become exposed when possession is lost.
Therefore, Aziz Ki’s true value will depend not only on his individual ability, but also on how head coach Manqoba Mngqithi uses him.
The Expectations of the Wananchi
Yanga supporters have huge expectations.
After continuing to dominate domestic football, they want that dominance to continue this season. But beyond that, the biggest attention is on the CAF Champions League.
