Yanga have retained the Community Shield for a second consecutive season after defeating Simba 1-0 in a thrilling clash at the New Amaan Complex Stadium in Zanzibar.
Despite a slow start, Yanga regained control after the 25th minute, with Albert Kangwanda scoring the only goal of the match in the 31st minute. He headed home a cross from Chadrack Boka to put the Wananchi ahead.
Peter Shalulile came close to doubling Yanga’s lead a few minutes later, but his shot from just outside the 18-yard box went narrowly wide.
Yanga continued to dominate after the break, with head coach Manqoba Mngqithi introducing Cheikh Touré and moving Shalulile to the right wing.
Yanga appeared more dangerous in attack than their opponents, but Simba came alive during the final five minutes as they pushed for an equaliser.
However, the resilience of goalkeeper Djigui Diarra and the Yanga defence ensured that their goal remained intact, securing victory for the Wananchi.
The trophy is Yanga’s first of the season and provides a strong start for the Tanzanian champions as they aim to reclaim all available titles and bring more silverware to Jangwani.
