Today’s Community Shield clash between Yanga and Simba SC is expected to be fiercely contested, with the competition’s history giving Yanga plenty to celebrate as they look to extend their impressive record.
The Community Shield was officially introduced in 2001, with the inaugural match featuring Yanga and Simba. Yanga made history by lifting the trophy after defeating their traditional rivals 2-1.
There was no Community Shield match between 2002 and 2008 after the competition was suspended. It returned in 2009 and has continued to the present day.
Overall, Yanga SC are the most successful team in the history of the competition, having won the Community Shield nine times. They are followed by Simba SC with seven titles, while Azam FC and Mtibwa Sugar have each won the trophy once.
In recent years, Yanga have continued to dominate the competition, winning the trophy in 2021, 2022, 2024 and 2025. Simba, meanwhile, won the title four consecutive times between 2017 and 2020, highlighting the intense rivalry between Tanzania’s two football giants.
Today’s match therefore adds another chapter to the long history of the Community Shield and the fierce rivalry between Yanga and Simba. Yanga will be looking to maintain their dominance and increase their tally of titles, while Simba will be seeking victory to bring the trophy back to Msimbazi.
The 90 minutes between the two sides will determine the winner at the New Amaan Complex Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 8:30 p.m. If the match ends level after 90 minutes, the winner will be decided by a penalty shootout.
