Yanga Star Mahlatse “Skudu” Makudubela Announces Retirement After 17-Year Football Career

South African international Mahlatse “Skudu – Minister of Entertainment” Makudubela has officially announced his retirement from professional football after a 17-year career.

Skudu shared the news through his social media pages, saying he has reached the end of his journey as a professional player and is now moving into a new chapter of his football life with the aim of becoming a coach.

In his message, Skudu wrote:

"After 17 years in professional football, today I announce my retirement from the game."

He explained that his journey began in 2004 at the SAFA Transnet School of Excellence before going on to play in several countries, including the Czech Republic, Georgia, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Angola.

"From SAFA Transnet School of Excellence in 2004 to playing in South Africa, the Czech Republic, Georgia, Tanzania, DRC and Angola — every jersey, every training session and every pitch shaped me and made me who I am today."

During his football career, Skudu represented several clubs both in South Africa and abroad.

His Time in Tanzania and at Yanga

Skudu became widely known among Tanzanian football fans after joining Yanga during the 2023/24 season.

At Yanga, he was part of a successful squad that performed strongly in various competitions and helped the club secure domestic titles.

His nickname “Minister of Entertainment” came from his entertaining style of play, particularly his ability to thrill fans with his skills and ball control.

His Achievements

Throughout his football journey, Skudu achieved several honours, including:

  • Winning the MTN8 title in South Africa.
  • Winning the Telkom Knockout Cup.
  • Winning the NBC Premier League title in Tanzania with Yanga.
  • Being part of the Yanga squad that won multiple trophies during the 2023/24 season.

In his retirement message, Skudu thanked everyone who played a role in his career, including coaches, teammates, medical staff, equipment personnel, and supporters.

He wrote:

"Thank you to every coach, every teammate, every medical professional, every equipment staff member and every fan who believed in me. The victories, defeats and every challenge I carry with pride."

For Skudu, football gave him more than achievements on the pitch. He said the game taught him discipline, brotherhood, and love.

"Football gave me everything. Discipline. Brotherhood. Love."

A New Chapter in Coaching

After officially hanging up his boots, Skudu has made it clear that his football journey is not over. Instead, he is beginning a new chapter with ambitions of becoming a coach.

"The boots are hung up... the coaching whistle is next."
