Young Africans SC are continuing efforts to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season, with reports suggesting the club has entered negotiations to sign Kaizer Chiefs winger Makabi Lilepo, a Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) international.
Sources close to the transfer process indicate that Yanga has contacted the player’s representatives, while the club’s new head coach, Manqoba Mngqithi, is said to be interested in securing Lilepo’s services.
Lilepo, who has been a long-term target for Yanga, was previously on the club’s radar in past seasons, but attempts to sign him were unsuccessful. This time, the club believes it has a stronger chance of completing the deal due to the new coach’s interest in the player.
He has requested to leave Kaizer Chiefs
Makabi Lilepo was not included in the Kaizer Chiefs squad that travelled to Spain for pre-season preparations, with reports indicating that he has already informed the club’s management of his desire to seek a new challenge.
The winger was among the key contributors for Kaizer Chiefs last season, when the team finished third in the South African Premier League.
During that campaign, Lilepo made 27 appearances, scoring five goals and providing four assists.
GSM sets aside funds for transfers
As part of preparations for the new season, Yanga appears ready to make a significant investment during this transfer window.
Reports from within the club’s leadership indicate that Yanga’s main sponsor and benefactor, GSM, has allocated close to TSh 10 billion for new signings and squad improvements.
The funds are expected to help the club attract high-profile players from Tanzania and abroad, with the aim of maintaining domestic dominance and improving performances in international competitions.
Lilepo is not the only name on the list
Alongside Makabi Lilepo, Yanga is also pursuing Al Hilal winger Jean Claude Girumugisha, who has attracted interest from several clubs due to his ability.
However, securing Girumugisha’s signature could prove more difficult due to strong market competition and the number of teams interested in his services.
If Yanga successfully completes the signings of Lilepo and Girumugisha, or at least one of the two players, the club will significantly strengthen its attacking options and could improve its chances of achieving greater success in the CAF Champions League and other competitions.
