New Yanga SC head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has made his ambitions clear, saying he wants to take the club further in international competitions, particularly the CAF Champions League, after being officially appointed as the successor to the Tanzania Premier League champions’ previous coach.
Mngqithi, a South African, said it is a great honour to join Yanga, a club with a rich history and major achievements in East African football, while expressing his desire to return to the biggest stage of African football.
Speaking for the first time after his appointment, Mngqithi said he is excited about the opportunity and ready to lead Yanga through the major challenges ahead, especially in the CAF Champions League.
“I wanted to return to the Champions League environment and see what can happen. Yanga is a club with big ambitions and a very professional structure. I hope to help take East Africa further in the Champions League,” said Mngqithi.
A Coach with a Strong African Football Background
Mngqithi is no stranger to high-level football in Africa. He is one of South Africa’s most experienced coaches, having built his reputation through his ability to develop team systems, nurture talent, and lead teams in major competitions.
Before joining Yanga, Mngqithi was in charge of Golden Arrows, a club he had previously served at during different stages of his coaching career.
His name gained even greater recognition during his successful spell with Mamelodi Sundowns, one of South Africa’s biggest clubs.
Successful Years at Mamelodi Sundowns
Mngqithi served as an assistant coach and later head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns, playing a key role during one of the club’s most successful eras in African football.
At Sundowns, he worked alongside several top coaches, including Pitso Mosimane, before eventually taking on the responsibility of leading the team himself.
During his time at Sundowns, he helped the club win domestic titles and regularly compete in CAF competitions, building a reputation as a coach with a strong understanding of competitive football.
He was part of the system that helped Sundowns become one of Africa’s strongest teams, with a philosophy based on attacking football, youth development, and scientific preparation.

Before reaching the top level, Mngqithi went through various stages to build his coaching career.
