Tanzania Premier League champions Yanga SC are reportedly set to appoint South African performance analyst Yardaan Valodia, who is expected to join the club’s technical bench alongside new head coach Manqoba Mngqithi.
Valodia’s arrival would strengthen Yanga’s strategy of increasing the use of technology, statistics, and modern analysis methods in team preparation.
From Dreaming of Playing Football to Becoming an Analyst
Yardaan Valodia’s journey in football is a unique story. Born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, Valodia began playing football at a young age through Stars of Africa Academy, a development centre owned by former Kaizer Chiefs coach Farouk Khan.
He dreamed of becoming a professional footballer, but his playing career was cut short by a serious injury that threatened his future in the sport. The setback forced him to stop playing, but instead of leaving football behind, it opened a new path within the game.
Using his experience and passion for football, Valodia moved into match analysis and began learning how to use video, data, and various performance information to help coaches make better decisions.
Helping South Africa’s Youth National Teams
Despite his young age, Valodia has already made an impact in football analysis. He has been part of the technical teams of two South African youth national sides that successfully qualified for FIFA World Cup tournaments in their respective categories.
As part of the behind-the-scenes technical team for South Africa’s Under-17 national team (Amajimbos) during the Africa U17 Cup of Nations, Valodia contributed to the team's preparations.
He was also involved with South Africa’s Under-20 national team (Amajita), which achieved a major milestone by winning the African title at the tournament held in Egypt.
Those experiences gave him the opportunity to work in highly competitive international environments, helping coaches analyze opponents, playing systems, and areas where teams could improve.
A 21-Year-Old with Big Ambitions
At just 21 years old, Valodia is among the emerging young football specialists in South Africa. His ability to combine his understanding of the game gained from his playing background with modern football technology has made him a valuable member of the teams he has worked with.
His responsibilities as a Performance Analyst include:
- Analyzing videos of opposing teams.
- Tracking player and team performance using data.
- Helping coaches identify areas that need improvement.
- Preparing technical reports before and after matches.
