After winning the Tanzania Mainland Premier League title for the fifth consecutive time, Young Africans (Yanga) are expected to begin preparations for the 2026/27 season with even greater ambition, as club leaders promise to build a squad capable of dominating both domestically and on the continental stage.
The 2025/26 season was historic for Wananchi after they secured their 32nd league title, further strengthening their position as the most successful club in Tanzanian league history. Yanga finished the campaign ahead of their biggest rivals Simba, who have 22 league titles.
However, the title race was far from easy. Yanga endured a difficult period affected by recruitment challenges and injuries to key players, forcing supporters to wait until the final matches before seeing their team officially secure the championship.
Yanga President Hersi Said admitted that last season did not reach the level the club had expected, but praised the players for fighting until the end and ensuring that the league trophy remained at Jangwani.
According to the club’s leadership, the new season will require a different level of preparation. The objective is to reclaim trophies lost last season and perform better in international competitions, particularly the CAF Champions League.
Transfer Window Expected to Mark New Era
Yanga supporters are now closely watching the transfer window, waiting to see the quality of players who will be added to the squad.
Wananchi expect the club to strengthen its midfield by signing creative players capable of creating chances and increasing competition in attacking areas.
Yanga have a major need to improve their attacking department following the departure of striker Prince Dube, whose contract with the club expired before he joined Hardrock FC of Zimbabwe. Dube was among Yanga’s important players last season, making a significant contribution during their league campaign.
The striker’s departure has left a gap that the technical bench will need to fill by signing a forward capable of making a major impact.

For Yanga, last season’s success is not a reason to become complacent. Instead, the challenges they faced have increased their determination to build an even stronger squad.
Wananchi want to see a highly competitive team capable of dominating domestic football and achieving better results in continental competitions.
