Yanga right-back Israel Mwenda is among the top defenders contributing assists in the NBC Premier League this season.
Mwenda, who has now cemented his place in the Wananchi starting lineup ahead of Yao Kouassi and Kibwana Shomari, has registered three assists so far. He trails only Ibrahim Imoro of Singida Black Stars, who has four assists.
Yanga head coach Pedro Gonçalves has continued to show trust in Mwenda despite pressure from some fans who want to see Yao “Jeshi” get more playing time, especially after recovering from injury.
However, Mwenda has not disappointed Gonçalves, as his assist numbers speak for themselves.
Meanwhile, Yao has been getting limited minutes in some matches, with Gonçalves explaining that he is using him cautiously to avoid further setbacks, as he has not yet fully regained match fitness.
Yao had been sidelined for approximately seven months after undergoing knee surgery at the end of last season.
