Yanga Opts for Stability Over Overhaul with Moalin’s Return

Yesterday, Yanga’s management officially announced the decision to bring back Abduhamid Moalin to the technical bench as an assistant coach, joining head coach Pedro Goncalves, who continues with his duties as usual.

This move was not made hastily. It followed a thorough evaluation after the completion of 15 matches in the first round of the NBC Premier League. Yanga, which has already played 16 matches, entered the FIFA international break at the top of the league table with 38 points—an indication that they are still on the right track to defend their title.

Three Draws Raise Concern Among Fans

Despite being top of the table, three consecutive draws in recent matches raised questions among Yanga fans. Many supporters expressed concern, with some even beginning to call for major changes to the technical bench.

This is not unusual in competitive football. Short-term results often influence fan emotions, even when a team is still leading the league.

A Strategic, Not Emotional Decision

Contrary to the expectations of some fans and rivals, Yanga’s leadership chose a calm approach—fixing rather than starting over.

Instead of dismantling the entire technical bench, they decided to add Moalin, who is no stranger to the club. He has previously worked at Yanga in various roles, including Technical Director and Assistant Coach under coaches such as Sead Ramovic and Miloud Hamdi.

This means Moalin clearly understands:

  • the club environment
  • the pressure from fans
  • the demands of Tanzanian football

The Risk of Major Mid-Season Changes

Making major changes to the technical bench in the middle of the season carries significant risk. New coaches often need time to adapt to:

  • the players
  • the club’s system
  • the competitiveness of the league

The reality is that Yanga does not have that time. With the goal of defending their title, they cannot afford to wait through a rebuilding process. That is why this decision appears more rational than emotional.

Moalin as a Solution to Tactical Challenges

Internal evaluations reportedly identified certain tactical shortcomings, particularly in away matches under Pedro Goncalves.

Instead of removing him, the management chose to support him by bringing in Moalin, who has extensive experience in local football.

This approach aims to:

  • improve away results
  • enhance Pedro’s understanding, especially in away matches
  • strengthen communication within the squad

What Did Rivals Hope For?

On the other hand, Yanga’s rivals would likely have preferred to see the entire technical bench dismantled and rebuilt.

The reason is simple—new coaching appointments often bring unpredictable changes. These changes can be:

  • positive (making the team stronger)
  • or negative (causing temporary instability)

In such a scenario, rivals could have taken advantage.

With this decision, Yanga has demonstrated administrative maturity. Instead of rushing into a risky quick fix, they have chosen a balanced approach—strengthening weak areas without breaking the existing foundation.

In a title race, it is not always necessary to change everything. Sometimes, success comes from making the right adjustments at the right time.

For Yanga, this could prove to be one of the most important decisions heading toward the end of the season. If they succeed in defending their title, the leadership will undoubtedly be praised for the choices they have made now.
