Yesterday, Yanga SC faced Azam FC at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in the ongoing NBC Premier League.
The match, dominated by tactical approaches from both coaches, saw few clear-cut chances as the teams exchanged periods of control.
Azam FC started strongly, creating multiple attacking opportunities in the first 30 minutes, but only one significant chance troubled Yanga goalkeeper Djigui Diarra early on.
The second half was largely controlled by Yanga, who created several threatening attacks, some of which were denied by Azam FC’s defense or squandered by their own players. The introduction of Pacome Zouzoua added extra sharpness to Yanga’s attack, increasing pressure in Azam FC’s penalty area, with some arguing that a penalty should have been awarded during the “golden minutes.”
Yanga needed all three points, but even the single point they earned is valuable, especially given that they faced a strong team also vying for the league title.
Azam FC this season has proven difficult to beat, remaining unbeaten in the league alongside Yanga. This marked Azam FC’s 18th consecutive league match without a loss, while Yanga reached their 34th.
Yanga did not take excessive risks; coach Pedro Goncalves instructed the team to play cautiously while occasionally attacking on the counter, aware of Azam FC’s dangerous transitions.
It is also important to note that this was Yanga’s fifth match in just 15 days, averaging a game every three days. Fatigue was noticeable at times, potentially affecting their efficiency and decision-making.
Both Yanga and Azam FC faced a congested fixture schedule, making the draw a fair result from a coaching perspective. There is no time to complain, as Yanga will play two more league matches within five days: against TRA United in Arusha on Wednesday and Mtibwa Sugar in Dodoma on Saturday.
