Young Africans Sports Club (Yanga SC) today celebrates 91 years since its establishment on February 11, 1935, continuing to stand as one of the largest and most influential sporting institutions in the history of Tanzania and East Africa as a whole.
Over nearly a century, Yanga have built an impressive record of success both domestically and internationally, while remaining a symbol of competitiveness, unity and the passionate loyalty of their fans, famously known as “Wananchi.”
Early History
Yanga was founded in 1935 in Dar es Salaam with the aim of providing Tanzanian youth a platform to participate in sports, particularly football, during the colonial era. From that time, the club grew rapidly to become the most widely supported team in the country.
For more than nine decades, Yanga have remained a pillar of Tanzanian football, fueling intense competition — especially in the historic Kariakoo derby against their traditional rivals, Simba.
Domestic Success
In their 91-year history, Yanga have won a record 31 Tanzania Mainland Premier League titles, making them the most successful club in the country. They have also lifted the CRDB Federation Cup five times, along with multiple Community Shield trophies and other domestic honors.
In the past four seasons, the club has demonstrated remarkable consistency, dominating local football by securing consecutive titles and maintaining a high level of performance.
International Progress
On the continental stage, Yanga have continued to make strides in Confederation of African Football (CAF) competitions. Among their recent achievements are reaching the CAF Confederation Cup final in 2023 and the CAF Champions League quarter-finals in 2024.
