For four consecutive seasons, Yanga have found themselves facing Algerian opposition in the decisive stages of either the CAF Champions League or the CAF Confederation Cup. Each season has carried its own story — its pain and its hope.
In the 2022/23 season, the Citizens met USM Alger in the CAF Confederation Cup final. After a 2-2 aggregate draw over two legs, Yanga lost the title on the away goals rule. They were beaten 2-1 at home before securing a 1-0 away victory — a win that was not enough to lift the trophy, but one that demonstrated their strength and resilience on the African stage.
The following season, 2023/24, they once again encountered an Algerian hurdle, this time against CR Belouizdad in a decisive match for a place in the CAF Champions League quarter-finals. Yanga needed a commanding 4-0 victory to qualify — a task that seemed monumental.
But at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, the Citizens made history. Goals from Mudathir Yahya, Kennedy Musonda, Stephane Aziz Ki and Joseph Guede secured a stunning 4-0 win and a quarter-final ticket. It was a night to remember, proof that nothing is impossible with belief and unity.
In the 2024/25 season, Yanga once again required victory against MC Alger to progress to the quarter-finals. However, this time things did not go as planned. The match at Benjamin Mkapa ended in a 0-0 draw — a result that shattered their hopes of advancing.
Now, this season, history repeats itself. Once again, the Citizens face Algerian opposition — JS Kabylie. To reach the quarter-finals, Yanga must win by at least 2-0, while also awaiting the outcome of the match between Al Ahly and AS FAR. An Al Ahly victory would significantly boost Yanga’s qualification chances.
However, the first and most important task lies in their own hands: winning their match. Everything else will be determined after the 90 minutes are completed.
The path is similar to the one they traveled against CR Belouizdad two seasons ago — they need belief, focus and courage. The only difference is the venue. This time, the mission must be accomplished at the New Amaan Complex in Zanzibar on Sunday at 7:00 PM.
Is it possible? This is yet another opportunity for Yanga to overcome an Algerian obstacle and write another chapter in their African journey by securing a place in the CAF Champions League quarter-finals.
