Despite Al Ahly’s vast and intimidating record in the CAF Champions League (CAFCL), Young Africans (Yanga) have never taken the field in fear whenever the two sides meet.
Statistics from past encounters between the two giants paint a clear picture of the intense competition expected today at Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria, Egypt, in a CAFCL group-stage match.
Apart from the 3–0 defeat Yanga suffered in 2009, all other meetings between the teams have been fiercely contested, ending either in draws or with the winner decided by a single goal.
In 2023, Yanga and Al Ahly were drawn into the same group (Group D), a situation similar to the current season. In the first match played in Dar es Salaam, the teams shared the points after a 1–1 draw, before Al Ahly edged a 1–0 win in the return leg played in Egypt.
That 2023 season saw Al Ahly and Yanga emerge as the two teams that qualified for the quarter-finals, and so far this season they continue to battle at the top of Group B for the two tickets to the next round.
This history adds extra appeal to today’s showdown, with Yanga aiming to write a new chapter against Africa’s most decorated champions.
