Today, Yanga officially begin their journey in pursuit of a CAF Champions League quarter-final spot as they step onto the New Amaan Complex pitch in Zanzibar to face Morocco’s AS FAR.
This is the opening match of Group B, with the Wananchi facing their first major test in what is considered the toughest group of the competition.
Both teams carry strong recent CAF pedigrees. Over the past three seasons, Yanga have reached the CAF Confederation Cup final and the CAF Champions League quarter-finals, while AS FAR played in last season’s CAFCL quarter-finals, where they were eliminated by eventual champions Pyramids.
AS FAR have previously won the CAF Champions League title, while Yanga continue to chase their dream of lifting it for the first time.
It is expected to be a difficult match, but the Wananchi need nothing short of victory to begin their campaign to secure all nine home points.
Yanga have had ample time to prepare for the clash, having camped in Zanzibar for four days to finalize their preparations.
This will also be the first time Zanzibar residents witness a CAF Champions League group-stage match on their soil, with Yanga bringing the continental spectacle closer to them.
All the best to Yanga, all the best to the Wananchi...
