Yanga Head Coach Pedro Goncalves says his squad is fully prepared for their opening CAF Champions League group-stage match against AS FAR, scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, at the New Amaan Complex in Zanzibar.
Speaking during a press conference earlier today, Goncalves acknowledged the difficulty of Group B—widely regarded as the “group of death”—but said it presents an opportunity for Yanga to compete against top teams and prove their quality.
He noted that AS FAR have established themselves as a strong side, but Yanga also possess a talented and well-balanced squad.
“Tomorrow is our first match of the group stage. Everyone calls it the group of death because of the four big teams. But if you want to be a champion, you must compete against champions.”
“FAR Rabat have a good team with quality players. We also have a very strong squad with great synergy. With enough support from our fans, we will have an even better performance,” Goncalves said.
Commenting on AS FAR’s strength, especially in midfield, Goncalves said he has prepared his team tactically and trusts his game plan.
“I know our opponents are very organized in midfield. I have 32 players, except for two who are injured. One of them is Clement Mzize, whom I would like to congratulate for winning the African Goal of the Season award. I believe this award will motivate him to work hard and return to the pitch with greater determination.”
“My philosophy is to control the game at all costs. I need my players to give everything. My main objective is for the team to play good football. I believe tomorrow’s result will depend on how well we play.”
“I believe good results come from calmness and concentration. The dream of Yanga fans is to one day win the African title. We are still in the process of building towards that goal.”
“It doesn’t matter when we win the trophy; what matters is the commitment. If we continue with this project, we will achieve our objectives. If we want to progress, we must evaluate how we are improving in every match,” Goncalves added.
