Yanga Head Coach Pedro Gonçalves has kicked off his tenure with a different approach, increasing the intensity of training sessions—particularly those focused on improving players’ physical fitness.
At various points this season, some Yanga fans have voiced concerns about the players’ physical sharpness, suggesting that their reduced fitness levels might be the reason the team’s trademark fast-paced football has not been as evident.
Some supporters even called on the club to hire a new fitness coach. However, Gonçalves has expressed satisfaction with the work of current fitness trainer Tshephang Mokaila. The Portuguese tactician has instead introduced a new style of conditioning exercises that he believes will make the players stronger and more athletic.
Just a few days into his training regime, the difference has started to show, with players admitting that sessions are now far more demanding compared to those under former coach Romain Folz, who was dismissed after Yanga’s CAF Champions League defeat to Silver Strikers.
Gonçalves has been working closely with Mokaila to push players through high-intensity running drills, followed by controlled ball exercises—all designed to build stamina, agility, and endurance.
Yanga fans can likely expect to see an improved and more energetic team on Sunday when the “Wananchi” take on KMC at the KMC Complex.
After that match, Yanga will have two weeks to prepare for their CAF Champions League group-stage fixtures—starting at home against AS FAR before traveling to Algeria to face JS Kabylie.
