As the most successful club in Tanzanian Premier League history with 31 league titles, Yanga enter this season with a heavy burden: to defend their crown and extend their dominance.
That responsibility now rests in the hands of their new coach, Frenchman Romain Folz, who has replaced Miloud Hamdi. Despite joining midway through last season, Hamdi ensured Yanga maintained their edge and successfully clinched the championship.
History places a huge responsibility on Folz: Yanga have won the league four seasons in a row (2021-22, 2022-23, 2023-24, and 2024-25). This streak halted Simba’s record of four consecutive titles, denying them the chance to claim a fifth.
The coaches who delivered those triumphs were Nasreddine Nabi (2021-22 and 2022-23), Miguel Gamondi (2023-24), and Miloud Hamdi (2024-25).
Now, as Folz takes the baton, he walks the same path as his predecessors — the path of trophies and domestic dominance. The signs are promising; he has already started the season by winning the Community Shield with a 1-0 victory over Simba, a result that signals his potential to continue Yanga’s winning tradition.
But the bigger challenge remains the CAF Champions League. Folz has been tasked with ensuring Yanga progress beyond the group stage, something they failed to achieve last season.
The journey begins in Angola, where Yanga will face Wiliete SC tomorrow, Friday, in the preliminary round.
Yanga are a club of trophies, and the legacy of his predecessors has set a high standard of success that Folz must now uphold.
