Tanzania’s national team, *Taifa Stars*, have lost all hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Niger in a Group E clash at the New Amaan Complex in Zanzibar.
Despite needing a win to stay in contention, Stars played below par for most of the match, with little visible energy or urgency from the players.
Fatigue may have been a major factor, as many of the players had just come from representing Tanzania at the 2024 CHAN tournament, leaving them short of sharpness in this decisive fixture.
Victory was crucial for Tanzania to keep their playoff hopes alive, especially after Morocco had already secured top spot in Group E and direct qualification. However, the loss ended those ambitions.
Niger’s win also served as revenge, after Taifa Stars had beaten them 1-0 in the first-round encounter.
Yanga players who featured in the national squad will now return to Avic Town to rejoin their club teammates in preparation for *Yanga Day* on Friday.
