In the latest club rankings released by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ahead of the preliminary draw for the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup, Yanga sits in 12th place with 34 points, level with Sudan’s Al Hilal.
The Tanzanian Premier League champions will begin their campaign in the preliminary round against lower-ranked teams. The draw for the preliminary stage will take place tomorrow, Saturday.
This season, only two teams will skip the preliminary round of the Champions League: Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns.
Therefore, both Yanga and Simba, Tanzania’s other representative in the Champions League, will start from the preliminary stage.
If Yanga manages to reach the group stage after the four matches in the preliminary and first round, they will secure a place in Pot 2 for the group stage draw.
Yanga, Pyramids, Al Hilal, and Simba could all be in Pot 1 if they qualify for the group stage, while Al Ahly, Mamelodi Sundowns, Esperance, and RS Berkane are also contenders for Pot 1 if they advance.
