In the 2022/23 season, Yanga’s soon-to-be-unveiled striker Andy Boyeli played for Power Dynamos, where he emerged as the top scorer of the Zambian Premier League with 18 goals.
His success in that season, which also saw him win the MVP award, earned him a move to South Africa to join Sekhukhune United.
Boyeli was signed by Dynamos from Chambishi midway through the season and scored crucial goals that helped Abayellow secure their first league title since 2011.
Kennedy Musonda had been the star in the first half of that season, but his transfer to Yanga opened up an opportunity for Boyeli.
Now, history seems to be repeating itself, as Boyeli is set to join Yanga, taking the place of Musonda, who has moved to Israel.
Before moving to Sekhukhune, Boyeli set a unique record at Power Dynamos, as his 18 goals made him one of the top strikers in the Zambian league over the past 12 years.
His 18 goals in the 2022/23 season placed him third behind Walter Bwalya, Chris Mugalu, and Idris Mbombo. Walter Binene Bwalya Sabwa scored 24 goals in 2016 with Nkana. Idris Mbombo and Chris Mushimba Mugalu scored 20 goals in 2018 and 2017, respectively.
Boyeli matched the 18-goal tally recorded by Nkana legend Ronald ‘Sate-Sate’ Kampamba in 2013.
In his first season in South Africa with Sekhukhune, Boyeli scored 7 goals in 27 matches. The South African league is competitive and often not easy for foreign stars. Many players have needed more than a single season to prove their quality.
