In what appears to be a continuation of strengthening the squad ahead of the upcoming season, Yanga SC is reported to have offered a new contract to their talented midfielder, Mudathir Yahya.
The star from Zanzibar has signed a two-year contract extension, a move that gives the “Wananchi” (Citizens) hope of continuing to witness his excellence at the Jangwani grounds.
Mudathir is among the players whose contracts are set to expire at the end of this season. Yanga’s management has already reached an agreement with him, with only the official announcement from the club remaining.
This decision has been driven by the outstanding form he has continued to display this season, despite technical challenges and shifts in responsibilities within the squad.
At 29 years old, Mudathir has been a central pillar in Yanga’s midfield for the past three seasons, a period during which the club has dominated Tanzanian football.
Last season was personally successful for him, as he managed to score 9 goals in the NBC Premier League — his best record as a central midfielder.
However, this season the number of goals has dropped, with only 2 scored so far. But this does not indicate a dip in form — it may rather be due to a change in his role on the pitch.
The frequent absence of Khalid Aucho due to injuries has forced Mudathir to take on more defensive midfield duties, rather than his usual box-to-box role.
At various times, Mudathir has played alongside Duke Abuya, who has also had an exceptional season. This has made Mudathir a versatile player, adapting his role according to the team’s needs.
Mudathir has assured Yanga fans that he will continue to give his all for the team. He hinted that "the phone calls will keep coming as usual."
