As the Kariakoo Derby scheduled for June 15 approaches, Yanga SC has expressed deep concern over the safety of its fans, following recent incidents involving acts of violence from supporters of their rival team, Simba SC.
In a recent official statement issued by the Yanga leadership, the club strongly condemned the attacks on its supporters during the CAF Confederation Cup final match between Simba and RS Berkane, which took place in Zanzibar last week.
Yanga has called on the relevant authorities, including the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), to take firm action against those involved in these shameful incidents, which the club described as contrary to the spirit and ethics of sportsmanship.
Photos and videos circulating online clearly show Yanga fans being attacked without cause, yet up to now, neither the TFF nor Simba SC has issued any statement to condemn or address the incidents. This silence has further heightened fear and uncertainty among Yanga supporters and members.
Even more concerning, violent incidents were repeated recently during a Premier League match between Simba SC and Singida Black Stars held at the KMC Complex Stadium, where some Simba fans were again involved in acts of chaos and breach of peace, including attacks on Singida Black Stars players.
Due to this series of events, it is evident that Yanga has another strong reason not to play match number 184, scheduled for June 15, following similar incidents that occurred on March 8.
A recent statement by Mzee Msumi, the Chairman of the Yanga Council of Elders, highlighted clear signs of potential unrest and stressed the need for the League Board and TFF to take swift action. This includes publicly releasing the findings of the investigation into the initial match, which was postponed on March 8.
It should be recalled that the earlier Derby, which was supposed to take place on March 8, was not played, with one of the reasons cited by the League Board being signs of potential violence.
