In the past, teams eliminated from the Champions League in the last round towards the groups were given the opportunity to play the last round of the Confederation Cup and if they win they go to play the group stage of the tournament
The 2022/23 season in which Yanga played the Confederation Cup final, benefited from this rule where after being eliminated by Al Hilal in the Champions League, they played the last round of the Confederation Cup knockout and managed to qualify for the groups after winning against Club Africain
In his first year as Chairman of the African Club Association (ACA), Engineer Hersi Said proposed that the rule be changed so that teams playing in the Champions League do not get the opportunity to go to the Confederation when they fail to qualify for the CAF CL
This is because often The teams that play in the CAF CL are the champions of their countries or those that finish in second place while the teams that play in the Confederation are those that finish in third place in their leagues or win the FA title
The changes were aimed at maintaining a fair balance of competition in the Champions League and the Confederation Cup
The new rule came into effect this season, which is why among the teams that participated in the Confederation Cup from the group stage, there is no champion team or one that finished at least in second place in the countries that provide four teams
