Burundi star Saido Berahino has officially announced his retirement from competitive football after a 15-year career, saying he leaves the game with no regrets because of the opportunities and benefits it has given him throughout his life.
Berahino, who played in the English Premier League (EPL) with West Bromwich Albion, says football has given him everything, taking him from difficult beginnings to playing in some of the world’s major leagues.
“Football has given me everything. From the streets of Bujumbura to The Hawthorns. From the Premier League to places I never imagined I would play. This game carried a young refugee boy through life,” Berahino said.
He also expressed his gratitude to West Bromwich Albion for believing in him and giving him an opportunity when he was still a young player.
“I want to thank West Bromwich Albion for believing in me when I was a boy. All those years at the club, the goals, the fans and the moments will always remain special. “To every teammate, coach and fan who has been part of the journey, thank you so much,” he added.
Berahino described his football career as a journey filled with challenges and joyful moments that have shaped his life and kept him connected to the game. The striker hangs up his boots at the age of 33, having played in the leagues of England and Belgium.
He also represented England’s youth national teams at various levels, from under-16 to under-21.
