Tanzania champions Yanga SC have put one foot in the CAF Champions League (CAFCL) group stage after thrashing CFFA 4-0 in the first leg of their qualifying tie.
The emphatic victory puts the Wananchi in a strong position to reach the group stage ahead of the return leg, scheduled for October 21 at Azam Complex.
With this result, Yanga head into the second leg with a significant advantage, while CFFA face a difficult task as they seek a big win to overturn the aggregate score.
The match began at a high tempo, with Yanga showing their determination to secure an early lead by launching repeated attacks and creating several scoring opportunities.
However, the Wananchi had to wait until the 42nd minute for the opening goal, when striker Ibrahim Toure capitalised on an error by the CFFA goalkeeper to put Yanga ahead before half-time.
Yanga created numerous clear-cut chances in the first half, but a lack of precision in front of goal prevented them from adding to their tally despite dominating the game.
Kangwanda, Mudathir and Maxi Complete the Job
Yanga resumed the second half by maintaining their attacking pressure, while CFFA appeared to struggle against the Wananchi's pace and intensity.
Those efforts paid off when Albert Kangwanda scored the second goal, making amends for a golden opportunity he had missed in the first half.
Mudathir Yahya then added another goal before Maxi Nzengeli completed the 4-0 victory, giving Yanga a commanding advantage ahead of the return leg.
The result puts Yanga in a strong position to qualify for the group stage, although they will need to manage their first-leg advantage effectively.
Despite the Win, Finishing Remains a Concern
Despite scoring four goals, Yanga's attacking line still has room for improvement, particularly when it comes to converting clear-cut chances.
The Wananchi missed approximately eight clear opportunities in the first half alone, meaning they could have secured an even bigger victory.
After their 4-0 win, Yanga must now complete the job in the return leg, which will take place on October 21 at Azam Complex.
Given their substantial advantage from the first leg, the Wananchi are well placed to reach the CAFCL group stage.
