Yanga Target Historic Fourth Consecutive CAF Champions League Group-Stage Appearance

The Wananchi are aiming to make history by qualifying for the CAF Champions League group stage for the fourth consecutive season, but must first overcome Madagascar's CFFA in the knockout round.

Yanga SC are preparing for another international test as they look to maintain their strong performances in the CAF Champions League.

The Tanzanian champions are expected to take to the pitch on Saturday at Azam Complex in Chamazi, targeting a result that would put them in a strong position to qualify for the group stage.

The encounter against Madagascar's CFFA comes as Yanga continue to reflect on the outcome of the Kariakoo Derby against Simba. However, for the Wananchi, continental competition offers an opportunity to return to winning ways and continue their historic journey in African football.

Three-Season Record Gives Yanga Hope

Over the past three seasons, Yanga have successfully qualified for the CAF Champions League group stage, demonstrating their continued presence at the highest level of African club football.

In the 2023/2024 season, the Wananchi eliminated Sudan's Al Merrikh 3-0 on aggregate. Yanga began with a 2-0 away victory before completing the job with a 1-0 win in the return leg.

The following season, 2024/2025, the team continued to demonstrate their strength by defeating Ethiopia's CBE 7-0 on aggregate. After a 1-0 away victory, Yanga returned home and secured a commanding 6-0 win, ensuring their progression with a decisive aggregate scoreline.

In the 2025/2026 season, Yanga faced a challenge from Silver Strikers but continued their campaign after winning the return leg 2-0, having lost the first leg 1-0. The Wananchi advanced with a 2-1 aggregate victory.

This season, Yanga have another opportunity to extend that run and set a record by qualifying for the CAF Champions League group stage for four consecutive seasons, provided they eliminate CFFA.

CFFA Are Not to Be Underestimated

Although Yanga have greater experience in international competitions in recent years, Madagascar's CFFA cannot be regarded as easy opponents.

The team, who are Madagascar's champions for the 2025/2026 season, reached this stage after eliminating Lesotho's Lijabatho 3-1 on aggregate.

That achievement shows that CFFA are also determined to continue their continental campaign. Yanga will therefore need to demonstrate concentration, tactical discipline and clinical finishing to secure the result they need.

Another challenge will be ensuring that the defence avoids mistakes that could give their opponents opportunities to score crucial goals in this knockout tie.

Both Matches to Be Played in Chamazi

Because Madagascar lacks a stadium that meets CAF requirements, CFFA have been forced to use Azam Complex in Chamazi for their first-leg encounter against Yanga.

This means both matches in the tie are expected to be played in Tanzania, potentially giving Yanga an advantage through their familiarity with the venue and the support of their fans.

However, playing at a familiar stadium alone will not guarantee victory. The Wananchi must take advantage of the opportunity to secure a positive result in the first leg before facing their opponents again in the return match, scheduled for October 21 in Chamazi.

A convincing win with a healthy goal margin could put Yanga in a stronger position ahead of the second leg, while a disappointing result would increase the pressure during the return match's 90 minutes.

Kamwe: Yanga Are Fired Up

Yanga's Media and Communications Manager, Ally Kamwe, has said the squad is motivated to take to the pitch and deliver the level of performance expected from a team competing in Africa's premier club competition.

Kamwe suggested that the result of the previous derby had increased the squad's determination to bounce back through this international fixture.

“Right now, we are really fired up. We are not dwelling on the previous result; we want to show how champions are expected to play in the Champions League,” Kamwe said.
