Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence and explained in detail what happened between him and Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus, saying he decided to tell the truth himself after previously promising to reveal what happened during the national team’s latest camp.
Ronaldo said that even before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he had already prepared a letter that he intended to use to officially say goodbye to the people of Portugal after ending his international journey. However, after the tournament, Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) president Pedro Proença asked him to reconsider his decision because the federation wanted him to continue representing the national team.
Ronaldo said Proença also consulted him about the appointment of Portugal’s new head coach and gave him an opportunity to share his opinion. Ronaldo claimed that he recommended Jorge Jesus as the right choice, which is why he was happy when Jesus was appointed. Jesus later contacted him and explained that he wanted Ronaldo as part of his new project, stressing that his presence was important to the team.
According to Ronaldo, during their initial discussions, Jesus explained how he planned to manage his playing time. Ronaldo would start the first and final matches of the camp while being rested in some games as part of his physical management. Jesus also suggested that Ronaldo should not travel with the team to Norway and Denmark, but Ronaldo rejected the idea because he felt it would not set a good example for the national team captain to remain behind while his teammates travelled. The discussions were also attended by Simão Coutinho, Al Nassr’s sporting director.
Ronaldo said that before the camp began, Jesus visited him at his home in Lisbon and their conversation went well, with their initial agreement remaining unchanged. Ronaldo started the match against Poland at Alvalade and did not complain when he was substituted, even handing the captain’s armband to Bruno Fernandes himself. However, things changed on the day of the Norway match, when one of Jesus’ assistants approached Ronaldo during lunch and told him that the coach wanted to speak with him.
Ronaldo said he was surprised when Jesus asked whether he was fit enough to play 30 minutes, despite their previous agreement that he would play the following match against Denmark at the Dragão. Ronaldo accepted the request and was told to be ready to come on. He began warming up in the second half, but the minutes continued to pass without him being called onto the pitch. From Ronaldo’s perspective, that was the moment their agreement was broken. The incident became a major source of misunderstanding between him and Jesus and eventually led to Ronaldo leaving Portugal’s training camp.
