The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has said the government is satisfied with the pace of infrastructure projects being implemented ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). President Mwinyi made the remarks on October 3, 2026, while speaking to the media at State House in Zanzibar.
Dr Mwinyi said the preparations are not limited to the construction and improvement of the stadium, but also include other important infrastructure projects, including the upgrading of roads in various parts of Zanzibar. The measures are aimed at ensuring that the island is fully prepared to welcome fans, visitors and stakeholders who will attend the tournament.
The President also said the ongoing developments are strengthening Zanzibar’s position in the preparations for AFCON 2027. He explained that inspectors from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have praised the progress made in the construction of the stadium, providing confidence that the preparations are moving in line with the required standards.
Tanzania has been given the responsibility of co-hosting AFCON 2027 alongside Kenya and Uganda, with the tournament scheduled to take place from June 19 to July 17, 2027. The cooperation between the three East African countries aims to ensure the tournament is successfully hosted while leaving a lasting infrastructure legacy in the region.
For Zanzibar, the progress of these projects has increased hopes of playing an important role in the history of AFCON 2027.
