Infantino orders review of increased funding for football associations worldwide

The President of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), Gianni Infantino, has ordered a review of proposals to increase the funding allocated to FIFA member associations for the period 2027 to 2030.

The move comes after the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) proposed that FIFA use part of its reserves to increase funding for its member associations.

According to the proposal, FIFA would release approximately $2.1 billion, equivalent to about TZS 5.6 trillion, to be distributed among its 211 member associations.

The proposal calls for each member association to receive at least $10 million, approximately TZS 27 billion, over the four-year period from 2027 to 2030.

UEFA and CONCACAF have also proposed an independent audit of FIFA’s reserves, which are estimated at around $6 billion, equivalent to approximately TZS 16 trillion.

The two confederations argue that even if FIFA releases $2.1 billion under the proposed funding plan, the organization would still retain more than $1.5 billion, or over TZS 4 trillion, in reserves.

According to the proposal, the remaining funds would be sufficient to ensure that FIFA’s financial capacity and ability to carry out its responsibilities would not be put at risk.

Infantino has now ordered an assessment of the proposals, a move that could lead to further discussions about how FIFA’s revenues and financial resources should be distributed among its member associations in the coming period.

If approved, the proposed funding could provide football associations around the world with additional resources for areas such as talent development, infrastructure, domestic leagues and other football development programmes.
