Taifa Stars head coach Miguel Gamondi has begun the process of finding a new captain for the national team after Mbwana Samatta stood by his decision to retire from international football following 15 years of representing Tanzania. Samatta announced his international retirement on July 7, 2026, saying it was time to give the next generation an opportunity.
Gamondi revealed that he is currently considering three candidates for the role: Yanga SC defender Bakari Mwamnyeto, striker Simon Msuva and midfielder Novatus Dismas. The coach said they initially tried to convince Samatta to reconsider his decision, but have now been forced to begin the process of identifying his successor.
Speaking about the candidates, Gamondi said Mwamnyeto has previous experience in the role, Novatus appears capable of becoming a leader both now and in the future, while Msuva holds an important position within the team. Mwamnyeto previously served as Taifa Stars captain before Samatta.
However, Gamondi said he does not want to make the decision alone and plans to give Taifa Stars players the opportunity to choose their new leader. He stressed that he is looking for a captain with discipline and genuine leadership qualities who can guide his teammates both on and off the pitch.
