Malick Yalcouyé has emerged as one of the most talked-about names after scoring for Brighton against Chelsea, with his performance attracting widespread attention. The 20-year-old produced an impressive display, scoring one goal, registering two shots on target, winning 77.8% of his duels and completing 80% of his dribble attempts..jpg)
After his appearance sparked online debate, with some questioning his age, Ivory Coast giants ASEC Mimosas moved to clarify his background. The club published photos of Yalcouyé from his early academy days to demonstrate that claims surrounding his age were unfounded. Yalcouyé also has chronic alopecia, a condition that can cause hair loss at a young age and has contributed to some of the surprise surrounding his appearance..jpg)
What makes Yalcouyé’s story particularly interesting in Tanzania is his reported connection with Simba SC before continuing his football journey to Europe. Reports indicate that in 2022, Simba submitted an offer to sign Yalcouyé while he was at ASEC Mimosas, but the deal was never completed. It is claimed that ASEC were asking Simba for a transfer fee of around $250, but the Tanzanian giants did not finalise the move..jpg)
Several years later, Yalcouyé is now performing on one of football’s biggest stages with Brighton, raising the question of whether Simba missed a rare opportunity to identify and develop a major talent at an early age.
His statistics against Chelsea showed that Yalcouyé is not simply a goalscorer. He demonstrated his ability to compete physically, take on opponents and contribute to build-up play. He registered 47 touches and two recoveries, while his goal brought him even greater attention.
Brighton have built a strong reputation for identifying and developing young talent, and if Yalcouyé continues performing at this level, his value could rise significantly in the coming years. From the ASEC academy, through Simba’s radar, to shining in the Premier League, Yalcouyé’s journey may only just be beginning.
