Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has expressed his desire for fellow Netherlands international Cody Gakpo to remain at Anfield despite reported interest from Manchester City ahead of the transfer deadline.
Speaking after Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest, Van Dijk stressed the importance of keeping quality players at the club, specifically describing Gakpo as an important member of the squad.
“He’s a quality player. I think we should keep quality players,” Van Dijk said.
Manchester City are reportedly prepared to offer up to £85 million for Gakpo, while Liverpool are said to be reluctant to sell unless they can first secure a suitable replacement.
The Reds are also continuing their efforts to strengthen their attacking options, with talks reportedly involving Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola.
Gakpo’s future at Anfield is therefore expected to remain a major talking point as the transfer deadline approaches.
