Former Manchester City and Barcelona star Yaya Touré has made history after guiding Slovan Bratislava to the UEFA Champions League League Phase, becoming the first African head coach to achieve the feat.
The 43-year-old achieved the milestone after Slovan Bratislava secured qualification in a dramatic play-off tie that was decided by a penalty shootout, following Cristian Martínez’s 100th-minute goal.
Touré was appointed Slovan Bratislava head coach in June this year, signing a three-year contract. The role represents his first position as a head coach after previously working as an assistant coach at various clubs and national teams, including the Saudi Arabia national team.
Since taking charge, Touré has enjoyed an impressive start to his managerial career, remaining unbeaten since becoming Slovan Bratislava’s head coach.
The achievement adds another significant chapter to Touré’s football journey as he begins to build his legacy in management after establishing himself as one of Europe’s finest midfielders during his playing career.
