The Ivory Coast national team has written a new chapter in its history after qualifying for the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time, following a 2-0 victory over Curaçao in their final Group E match at Philadelphia Stadium.
The win enabled Ivory Coast to finish second in the group with six points, behind Germany, breaking their long-standing curse of failing to progress beyond the group stage in their previous World Cup appearances.
In the historic match, forward Nicolas Pépé was the star of the night, scoring both goals, including an early strike in the seventh minute that came after a defensive error by Curaçao. His brace gave Les Éléphants control of the match, allowing them to see out the game comfortably until the final whistle.
Ivory Coast's journey through Group E was far from easy. In their opening match, they secured a 1-0 victory over Ecuador thanks to a last-minute goal from Amad Diallo. They then suffered a 2-1 defeat to Germany in a match that featured a goal from Franck Kessié before Germany's striker Deniz Undav scored the winner to complete the comeback.
However, the victory over Curaçao has become one of the most significant moments in the nation's football history, erasing the disappointment of failing to advance beyond the group stage at the 2006, 2010, and 2014 World Cups, despite fielding talented squads filled with star players and high expectations.
For the first time ever, Ivory Coast will now compete in the World Cup knockout stage, a milestone that has sparked great celebrations across the country and throughout Africa, given the team's status as one of the continent's football powerhouses in recent years.
Ivory Coast will now face the winners of Group I in the Round of 32 on July 3, 2026, hoping to build on this historic achievement and write another memorable chapter in their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
