Senegal World Cup Hopes Fade After Second Straight Defeat to Norway

Senegal's 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign has entered a difficult phase after suffering its second consecutive defeat in Group I, this time losing 3-2 to Norway in an exciting match played in New Jersey, United States.

The result leaves Senegal without a single point after two matches, and their hopes of advancing now depend on the outcome of their final group match against Iraq, as well as calculations involving the best third-placed teams.

Norway demonstrated its quality through star striker Erling Haaland, who continued his impressive form by scoring two crucial goals. Defender Marcus Pedersen also got on the scoresheet after capitalizing on defensive mistakes by Senegal. The victory secured Norway a place in the knockout stage for the first time since the 1998 World Cup.

Despite Senegal's determined effort, two goals from Ismaila Sarr were not enough to prevent defeat. Sarr's second goal came in stoppage time, but Norway successfully held on to its lead until the final whistle.

This loss comes after Senegal was beaten 3-1 by France in its opening group match. In that game, Kylian MbappΓ© led France to an important victory over the African representatives.

At present, Group I is led by France and Norway, both with six points after winning their first two matches. Senegal and Iraq remain at the bottom of the group without any points.

Senegal must now defeat Iraq in their final group match on June 26 while hoping that other results work in their favor, allowing them to qualify for the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams. However, the defensive errors seen in the first two matches must be corrected quickly if the Teranga Lions are to keep their World Cup dream alive.

For Norway, the victory further confirms that they are one of the teams capable of making a deep run in the tournament, particularly because of the outstanding form of Haaland, who has now joined the race for the Golden Boot with four goals.
