Star player Miguel Almirón has made headlines in the FIFA World Cup after being shown a red card for speaking to an opposing player while covering his mouth during a match between Paraguay and Turkey.
The incident is linked to the enforcement of new disciplinary rules announced by FIFA ahead of the tournament, which prohibit players from speaking to opponents while hiding their mouths, with the punishment being an immediate red card.
The referee enforced the rule after Almirón was seen responding to an opponent following a foul, while covering his mouth, an action that was interpreted as a direct violation of the new regulations.
Despite Paraguay being reduced to ten men due to the loss of a key player, the team maintained discipline and went on to secure a 1–0 victory over Turkey, a result that strengthened their position in Group D.
For Turkey, the defeat marked a second consecutive loss, leaving them at the bottom of the group with no points and one remaining match to try and stay in the competition.
The Group D standings show the United States leading with six points, followed by Australia and Paraguay with three points each, while Turkey remains bottom. Each team has one match left to play.
