DR Congo Make World Cup History with Draw Against Portugal

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) wrote a new chapter in its World Cup history yesterday after securing a 1-1 draw against Portugal in a Group K match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Houston, United States.

Portugal made a fast start and took the lead in the sixth minute through João Neves, who finished off a cross from Pedro Neto. Many expected Roberto Martinez’s side to dominate from that point, but DR Congo displayed impressive defensive discipline and courage on the counterattack.

History was made in first-half stoppage time when striker Yoane Wissa connected with a cross from Arthur Masuaku to score the equalizer. The goal was DR Congo’s first-ever goal in FIFA World Cup history and also earned the nation its first point at the tournament.

DR Congo returned to the World Cup for the first time in 52 years, having last appeared in 1974 under the name Zaire. In that tournament, they finished without a point and failed to score a goal, making this result even more significant in the country's football history.

The second half saw Portugal dominate possession, but they struggled to find the creativity needed to break down DR Congo’s resilient defense. Cédric Bakambu came close to winning the match for the Congolese side when he struck the woodwork, while Cristiano Ronaldo missed two good opportunities for Portugal.

The match also saw the 41-year-old Ronaldo set a new record as the oldest player ever to start a FIFA World Cup match. However, the Portuguese star was unable to inspire his team to the victory many had anticipated.

DR Congo head coach Sébastien Desabre described the result as an important milestone for his country but stressed that his team had not yet achieved its ultimate objectives. Meanwhile, Portugal coach Roberto Martinez admitted that his side failed to create enough clear chances despite controlling much of the game.
