Serengeti Boys Fall on Penalties to Senegal in Historic AFCON U-17 Final

The historic journey of Tanzania's Serengeti Boys at the CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations came to a heartbreaking end after a 4-2 penalty shootout defeat to Senegal following a 1-1 draw in the final played on Tuesday night in Rabat, Morocco.

Despite finishing as runners-up, Tanzania made history by reaching the final of the tournament for the first time, highlighting the remarkable growth of youth football in the country.

Serengeti Boys started the match brightly and took an early lead in the seventh minute through Hamis Chenga, who finished off a well-worked attack that caught the Senegalese defense off guard. The goal gave Tanzanian fans great hope as they followed the match with excitement.

After conceding, Senegal raised their level and began pressing forward in search of an equalizer, while Tanzania focused more on protecting their advantage.

The second half began with sustained pressure from the Senegalese side, who controlled much of the game. Their efforts paid off in the 64th minute when Ibrahima Dione scored after Tanzania's goalkeeper saved a free-kick from Souleymane Commissaire Faye but could only push the ball into the path of the striker.

Both teams created several chances in the remaining minutes, but neither was able to find a winning goal during normal time, sending the match to a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Senegal showed great composure by converting all four of their penalties. Tanzania struggled under pressure as Kilendemo and Mbegu missed their spot-kicks, allowing Senegal to secure a 4-2 victory on penalties and claim the African title.

The result saw Senegal crowned AFCON U-17 champions, while Tanzania settled for silver medals after an impressive campaign that won admiration across the continent.

Tanzania Leave with Several Individual Honors

Despite losing the final, Tanzania departed Morocco with significant achievements. Serengeti Boys won the Fair Play Award, while Dismas Athanasi Elieneza finished the tournament as the top scorer with three goals. In addition, Issa Chole was named the Player of the Tournament.

Head coach Elieneza Nsanganzelu said his team has many reasons to be proud despite missing out on the title.

"It is a great achievement to qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup and reach the AFCON final for the first time in Tanzania's history," he said after the match.
