Argentina Eye Back-to-Back Glory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Defending world champions Argentina head into the 2026 FIFA World Cup with high hopes of retaining the title they won in Qatar in 2022 after defeating France in one of the most dramatic finals in football history.

Argentina lifted the trophy after a 4-2 penalty shootout victory following a thrilling 3-3 draw after 120 minutes at Lusail Stadium in Qatar. Their captain, Lionel Messi, made history by winning the World Cup for the first time in his international career.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and will feature 48 nations for the first time in tournament history.

For this year’s tournament, Argentina have been placed in Group J alongside:

Messi Still the Main Talking Point

The biggest question among football fans worldwide is whether Lionel Messi will continue playing for Argentina at the tournament. Messi is now 39 years old and has not officially announced his retirement from international football. However, if he participates in the 2026 World Cup, many believe it could be his final tournament with the national team.

Many supporters believe his experience will remain a key weapon for Argentina, while stars such as Julián Álvarez, Enzo Fernández, and Alexis Mac Allister are expected to carry even greater responsibility.

Favorites to Win the Tournament

  • Argentina
  • France
  • Brazil
  • England
  • Spain
  • Portugal

This year’s tournament is expected to be even more competitive due to the expansion to 48 teams and the introduction of a new competition format.

A Historic World Cup

Unlike previous editions, the 2026 FIFA World Cup will feature a total of 104 matches, giving more nations than ever before the opportunity to reach the knockout stages.
