Arsenal Hold Atlético Madrid to 1–1 Draw in Champions League Semi-Final First Leg

Atlético Madrid were held to a 1–1 draw by Arsenal in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final played on Wednesday night, April 29, 2026, at the Metropolitano Stadium.

Arsenal took the lead first through striker Viktor Gyökeres, who scored from the penalty spot in the 44th minute after a foul inside the box. The goal gave the visitors an important advantage going into halftime.

However, the second half began strongly for the hosts, with Atlético Madrid equalizing through a penalty converted by Julián Álvarez in the 56th minute after the referee confirmed the decision with the help of VAR.

The highly competitive match saw both sides pushing for a winning goal without success. Atlético Madrid appeared more dominant in the second half, missing several clear chances, including an effort from Antoine Griezmann that struck the post.

On the other hand, Arsenal played cautiously, focusing on protecting their away result, despite having another late penalty decision overturned by VAR.

The result leaves everything open heading into the return leg in London, where the aggregate winner will secure a place in the final of Europe’s premier club competition.

Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone said his team will step up their efforts in the second leg, while Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta emphasized the importance of making the most of their home advantage to secure victory.

The return match is expected to be fiercely contested, with both teams aiming to book a spot in this season’s UEFA Champions League final.
