In a message of unity and condemnation of discrimination, Vinícius Júnior, the attacking midfielder for Real Madrid and the Brazil national team, expressed his support for Lamine Yamal, the young FC Barcelona star, following recent incidents of racist remarks heard in stadiums.
This comes after an international friendly match between Spain and Egypt at RCDE Stadium in Barcelona, where some fans directed offensive comments with Islamic discrimination overtones.
The incident prompted Spanish police to launch an investigation into the source and impact of these racially and religiously motivated remarks.
Amid widespread discussion, Yamal, who is Muslim, took to social media to share his feelings about the comments, describing them as “disrespectful and unacceptable,” while noting that the remarks were aimed at the opposing team on the field and not personally at him.
In his show of solidarity, Vinícius Jr further expressed support for the Barcelona youngster, highlighting the importance of fighting ongoing discrimination in European football.
The attacking midfielder, who has himself faced racist abuse in Spain in recent years, called on the football community to unite against discriminatory behavior and collaborate to combat it effectively.
