Barcelona strengthened their position at the top of the La Liga standings after securing a 2-1 victory over Atlético Madrid in a thrilling encounter played in Madrid.
The crucial win boosts Barcelona’s hopes of lifting the league title this season, especially after their main rivals, Real Madrid, suffered a defeat earlier in the day.
In the match, Atlético Madrid took the lead late in the first half through Giuliano Simeone. However, Barcelona responded quickly with an equalizer from Marcus Rashford just minutes before halftime.
The game shifted significantly when Atlético were reduced to 10 men after Nico González received a red card near the end of the first half, allowing Barcelona to dominate possession in the second half.
Despite strong resistance from Atlético, star striker Robert Lewandowski scored the winning goal in the closing stages, finishing off a rebound from the goalkeeper.
The result sees Barcelona extend their lead at the top to seven points with 76 points, with around eight matches remaining in the season.
Earlier, Real Madrid suffered a setback after losing 2-1 to Mallorca, a result that has significantly dented their title hopes and handed Barcelona a stronger advantage in the La Liga race.
